What happens if the filter is too strong for the fish?
Q. My fish are suffeirng from white spot and i changed the water yesterday and now it is misty i have no sponge in the filter because of the medication (it told me to on the bottle) and now it is misty water i must state that i changed the water yesterday! SO i have put the filter on a strong current is this ok??? the filter is loud! but is it bad 4 the ifsh if the current is strong?

A. You miss read the label, it told you to take the carbon out not the filter pad. Sometimes filter pads with carbon in them don't have a way to open them without destroying them and sometimes you can. If no you should destroy one and just put the pad back in. The cloudiness however is most likely the biological filter recycling because you removed the main place where it was besides the gravel and the meds killing off the biological filter. Assuming you have a good sized tank and it was fully cycled the gravel should have enough bio filter in it to make it not have much of an effect. The current makes no difference without the pad. Its not going to hurt or help the fish unless you have a filter that's way to big for your tank or you have… [cont.]

How long should a refrigerator water filter last?
Q. I have a Kenmore refrigerator and the filter indicator tells me it needs to be changed around every 6-8 months. The filter are around $50 a pop so its a bit costly. Where is the best/cheapest place to purchase a replacement filter & could you extend the life of the filter by cleaning it?

How can I tell if the filter stream is too strong for my aquarium?
Q. I have a Whisper 20-gallon in-tank filter for my ten gallon tank (passed on from old turtle tank), which houses some juvenile and adult guppies. When I turn the filter on it looks like they have to swim to keep away from it...they don't get sucked in but they don't look too happy either. They're constantly wiggling harder than when it's off (they look relaxed when it's off). They'll be moved to a bigger tank next week, but as for right now, how can I tell whether or not they have to fight too hard to swim away from the filter? I'm going out of town for a week so I can't leave it on during the day and turn it off at night.

A. Usually when people get new tanks and filter its usually required to upgrade but 2x the gallon because of bioload but i would go for a filter meant for a tank that is standard like 5gallon tank with a 5 gallon made filter and keep that up to a 15gallon tank with a 15gallon made filter. But when it hit 20gallons thats when you upgrade it to make a 20 or 29 gallon tank with a 30-60 gallon made filter and use the 20gallon made filter as a back-up. So you can get a 10gallon made filter or simply get a 20gallon tank. Its your option Hope this info helps WT
