A city is a relatively large and permanent urban settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.

For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter. Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral, hence the official status of St David's as a city in the United Kingdom despite its population of 1,797 in 2001.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process. A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban sprawl, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers of employment. Once a city sprawls far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

A. The increase of urban city, means that their are more shopping center, more business which attracts many people from other cities and it also helps the city as it get more taxes. As the Urban city develops it is usually very "together" crowed in which a person can just walk to the next store instead of driving 10 miles to get to store, which is use of fossil fuel and causes CO2 in the atmosphere

What is the difference between a world city and a global city?
Q. My textbook (A Sociology of Globalization by Saskia Sassen) says that most global cities are also world cities, but some are not world cities in the full sense of the term. It also says that world cities refer to a type of city that has been seen over the centuries, particularly in a lot earlier periods in Asia or European colonial centers. I still don't get what the difference is. When I looked it up online, Wikipedia said that they are the same thing, but I need to know the difference.

A. In simpler times, there were mega-cities and capital cities. Mega-cities originally were defined as those having a population in excess of 4 million people. While capital cities were the seat of their nations, regardless of size. Today, things are far more complicated and mega-cities have grown both in number and in size. In her 1991 book, "The Global City," Saskia Sassen referred to economic hubs, specifically New York, London, and Tokyo, as "global cities." The basic idea was that all of the world's economic activity flowed through these urban conglomorates. The term "world city" dates back to a 1915 text in which it was defined as being located in a strategic world location. At that time, such a city would also have been a "world… [cont.]
